5 Things You Do That Make Your Hair Thinner

Dollarphotoclub_57685415 copyStrong, thick, soft, lustrous. These are words that we like to use to describe our hair. However, in reality, that may not be the case. Habits, lifestyles, food choices, all of these things have an impact on our hair. Depending on what yours are, you may be leaving your hair thin, brittle and dry.

Today the Dolce Vita Salon team is going to shed light on the subject of thin hair. We are going to share with you, a few things that you probably find yourself doing on a daily basis, that will result in thin and damaged hair.

Why Your Hair is Thinning

1. Hot Showers

Much like the skin, hot water dehydrates hair. As a result, hair becomes dry and brittle and is more likely to break and fall out. Another problem with hot showers is when you use extremely hot water, you are essentially washing all of your hair’s natural oils down the drain. The lack of oil causes your pores to work extra hard to produce more oil. This will damage the root and cause more shedding.

2. Heat Styling

The extremely high temperatures that are applied to your hair during heat styling damage the proteins that compose your hair and it’s protective cuticles. Once you have damaged the cuticle, your hair’s moisture balance is thrown off, leading to breakage.

Limit your heat styling to only a couple of times per week in order to lessen the damage.

3. Crash Dieting

An improper diet, where you do not allow your body the calories needed in order to maintain normal functions causes your body to choose where its energy will go. Obviously more energy will be given to the heart and brain, leaving the hair lacking. In fact, one of the most common symptoms of anorexia is hair loss.

4. Mishandling Wet Hair

Our hair is at its most vulnerable place when it is wet. Brushing your hair while it is wet, and then using a towel to soak up the water, is the perfect way to set yourself up for breakage and damage.

Brushing your hair before your shower, and allowing your hair to air dry is a safer alternative. Also, always use a wide tooth comb on wet hair after washing.

5. Tight Hairstyles

Do you find yourself wearing your hair up on most occasions? It is important to be aware of the damage this can cause. A tight bun or ponytail puts excessive strain on the hair follicles. This damage often results in scars that cause permanent hair loss.

Wear your hair in looser updos, or try wearing your hair down more often!
